BAR has developed a new "2005 Update Training Course" for Smog Check technicians with licenses expiring in January 2005 and later, according to Wayne Brumett in BAR's Standards and Training Unit. As a result of recent changes, technicians will no longer need to take the State licensing examinations with Experior Assessments to renew their license. However, technicians will still need to mail in a renewal application and fee to renew the license after completing an Update course.
Listed below are some questions and answers regarding the new course:
- Will the course be eight hours long like the last course?
- What subjects will be covered in the course?
- Can you tell me more about the laboratory assignments?
- Will the examination be open-book like the last course?
- When will this course be available and where can I find a school in my area?
- How much will the course cost and how often do schools give these courses?
- Can I challenge this course?
- If my license expires this year (2004) can I just take the new 2005 Update Course instead of the currently required 2003 Update course?
- Will I need to show the instructor some identification to enter the course?
- More questions?
- Will the course be eight hours long like the last course?
- The course will be approximately 16 hours in length, with eight hours of lecture/examination and eight hours of laboratory assignments.
Back to the Top- What subjects will be covered in the course?
- The course will cover:
- BAR program updates
- Overview of "lambda" air/fuel calculations
- Overview of wide range air/fuel sensors
- Diagnosing emission failure problems using scan tool data stream analysis
- Using OBD II (OEM) enhanced data to analyze emission failures
Back to the Top- Can you tell me more about the laboratory assignments?
- There will be six laboratory assignments, with most assignments
requiring the use of an OBD II vehicle and an enhanced scan tool.
Technicians will work in teams of three (or less) when performing the
laboratory assignments. Most technicians will complete the laboratory
assignments in 6 to 8 hours.
NOTE: Most schools have a limited number of scan tools and OBD II equipped vehicles available for laboratory assignments. BAR will allow technicians to take their own scan tools and/or OBD II equipped vehicles to class (subject to instructor's approval). Having additional scan tools and vehicles may facilitate completion of the laboratory assignments.
Back to the Top- Will the examination be open-book like the last course?
- The examination will be closed-book, multiple choice and will be given
at the end of the course.
For a technician to be well prepared for the new course material, BAR recommends that technicians review their A6, A8 and L1 course materials and their Clean Air Car Course Student Workbook (pp 155-175) prior to taking the course. The final examination may cover voltage drop testing, reading wiring diagrams, scan tool diagnostics etc., that is covered in this material.
Back to the Top- When will this course be available and where can I find a school in my area?
- This course should be available in most schools by late August 2004. You can find a school by using BAR's website: www.smogcheck.ca.gov/sandt/schools/query_schools.asp Alternatively, you can have a list of BAR schools mailed to you by calling (800) 952-5210. All schools on the list are authorized to offer this course. However, technicians should contact individual schools for class availability and scheduling.
Back to the Top- How much will the course cost and how often do schools give these courses?
- The cost of the course is determined by each school. Traditionally, public schools (i.e., community colleges and ROPs) are lower in cost, but may not have the number of course offerings, or convenient time slots that private schools offer.
Back to the Top- Can I challenge this course?
- No. You must attend all course hours, complete all the laboratory assignments and pass the written examination (score 70% or better) to pass the course. If you fail the written examination, the school MAY allow you to take a second chance examination. If you fail the second chance examination, you will have to re-take the complete course. Schools are under no obligation from BAR to offer technicians the second chance examination.
Back to the Top- If my license expires this year (2004) can I just take the new 2005 Update Course instead of the currently required 2003 Update Course?
- Technicians with licenses expiring starting January 2005 will need to complete the "2005 Update Course." Technicians with licenses expiring in 2004 will need to complete the 2003 Update Course. BAR will make sure both courses are available to accommodate technicians in both situations. Whether your license expires in 2005 or 2006, you may take the 2005 Update Course as early as you choose to meet the renewal requirement in those years.
Back to the Top- Will I need to show the instructor some identification to enter the course?
-
Yes. You will be required to show photo identification to the instructor
at the beginning of the course. The following are acceptable forms of
photo identification to enter any BAR course:
- California Driver License/ID
- Active duty military ID
- Smog Check license/badge.
Back to the Top- More Questions?
- If you have any further questions or comments about this course, feel free to call Wayne at (916) 255-1391 or email him at wayne_brumett@dca.ca.gov .
